5.0 out of 5 stars Ol' Slantface is a real page-turner, written by a great man with a great story to tell. November 3, 2016 Format: Paperback John T. Wayne captures the reader's attention on page one. Blending fiction with faithfully-detailed historical context, the author transports the reader to the tumultuous times of the War Between the States, and in particular, the perilous lives led by those children orphaned by this bloody conflict. Ol' Slantface is a real page-turner, written by a great man with a great story to tell. I happened across this book and its author at the 7th Annual Gathering of Authors Convention in Texarkana, Arkansas in October of 2016. I was there with other authors, making a difference by raising funds for St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital and the Arkansas Children's Hospital. The book reads smoothly, just like listening to John T. Wayne himself. -- Review by Michael J. 5.0 out of 5 stars Blood Once Spilled March 8, 2013 Format: Paperback This book contains much information about souther plantation life and how hard that life was after the civil war. Even though this book is historical fiction, it really portrayed how life was by my understanding. I really like the quote when the author said, "I love the south, you can still get away with telling the truth in the south." If we had more of that we would be better off. I also liked the testomony he gave that Christ spilled His blood for all. Good way of putting it in "Blood Once Spilled." A must read!!!! Revpinky

4.0 out of 5 stars Civil War Activities in Arkansas and Missouri July 20, 2019 Format: Kindle Edition This is a story of individuals caught up in the Civil War, but not actually serving in any formal military organization. Personal feuds overlay wartime activity, dragging young Duke John Robinson into the war he'd been trying hard to avoid. Actual historical characters abound, from Captain Nathaniel Bolin to Sheriff Maurice Wright to Belle Starr to Judge Isaac Parker, although historical timelines were condensed or changed for the storyline. Still, it's a rip-roaring good read. I look forward to reading more from Mr. Wayne. R. K. Smith

Captain Grimes
Captain Grimes
5.0 out of 5 stars Wow. Just wow. July 15, 2016 Format: Paperback I actually met Mr. Wayne, grandson of the icon of Western movies. After talking with him, I bought this book because I like the Civil War. Also because Mr. Wayne knows Missouri and its history. After the first few pages, I was hooked! Telling the story from Absolom Grimes' point of view as that of a riverboat captain turned Confederate mail carrier and blockade runner, Wayne weaves historical facts with fast moving dialogue and action. At times the grammar and spelling are a slight issue, since it seems as if the publisher, as so many nowadays, used spellcheck instead of proofreading. Wayne's conversational style, however, overcomes those little niggles. This is a book in his series called the "Gaslight Boys", a name given to orphans in St. Louis during the Civil War. Grimes was an actual person and Wayne uses his diary and other documents for authenticity. Grimes and Mark Twain were both riverboat captains, and the author makes sure to note the contributions of both to the war effort. However, Twain is very much downplayed here in place of the heroics of Grimes. This is only part 1 and I shall impatiently look forward to part 2 which is due to come out in 2016. Susannah

5.0 out of 5 stars September, 22 2019 Format: Paperback I thought this was one the best in The Gaslight Boys series. It started human trafficking or as it was know then, as kidnapping and slave trading, but John Robinson has come a long Way. It’s a fast and exciting read, survival is a basic instinct for young Duke. I highly recommend! RDP
